XYZ Racing Racing Spec Coilovers — Mercedes-Benz GLA X156 2014-2020

The X156 GLA sits awkwardly in the Mercedes line-up – tall enough to be called a crossover, low enough to ride like a hatch that someone lifted by an inch. That ride-height compromise is exactly what the Racing Spec set is built to undo, dropping the centre of gravity and replacing the factory’s anti-roll-bar-led body control with proper damper authority.

For owners running the GLA45 AMG or even a remapped 250, the standard struts run out of ideas the moment you load the front axle into a fast B-road corner. Racing Spec is the rung above Circuit Master in XYZ’s range – a circuit-first coilover that still tolerates a road commute if you are sensible with your spring choice.

What this coilover does for your 2014-2020 Mercedes Benz GLA X156

Body roll on the X156 is the headline problem and it disappears first. The 30-way damping adjustment on the Racing Spec lets you firm up rebound to kill the secondary float you get from the OE bushing stack, which on the GLA telegraphs every camber change through the steering. Drop the front 30-40mm and the nose starts to bite on turn-in rather than washing wide.

Spring rates are specified per chassis rather than carried over from a generic SUV table, so the front-to-rear balance respects the X156’s nose-heavy 4MATIC weight bias. On a 45 AMG the gain is measurable – the rear axle stops feeling like dead weight under trail-braking and the car finally rotates on the throttle rather than scrubbing.

About the Racing Spec coilover

Racing Spec uses a monotube damper body with a separate piston rod and a larger oil capacity than the entry Super Sport set, which is the reason it can handle sustained track use without fade. The 30-position adjuster works across both bump and rebound on a single dial – simpler to live with than separate two-way kits, and accurate enough for a fast-road owner who is not chasing tenths.

Pillow-ball top mounts at the front sharpen steering response and remove the rubber compliance that softens the GLA’s initial turn-in. Camber is adjustable through the upper mount where the chassis allows it. Spring perches are threaded the full length of the body so ride height and pre-load are set independently – the correct way to corner-weight a car rather than relying on collar height alone.

Spring rates sit higher than the Circuit Master kit, biased toward grip over compliance. The expectation is a track-focused setup that still works on a B-road, not a daily-driver compromise.

Fitment for the Mercedes Benz GLA X156 (2014-2020)

Direct fit for the X156-generation GLA across the full 2014-2020 production run, covering the GLA 180, 200, 220, 250 and the 45 AMG. The chassis code is fixed at X156 – the later H247 generation uses a different strut geometry and is not covered by this listing.
