XYZ Racing Top Sport Coilovers — Hyundai I 30 FD (TYPE 1) 2007-2012

The first-generation i30 FD landed in 2007 as Hyundai’s serious tilt at the European C-segment, and the chassis underneath it – MacPherson strut front, multi-link rear – was tuned in Rüsselsheim for a softly damped ride that flatters supermarket runs and gives up under any sort of load. Anyone who has pushed a stock FD through a fast B-road sweeper knows the story: vague turn-in, body roll that arrives before the front tyres have fully loaded, and a rear that goes light over mid-corner crests. The XYZ Racing Top Sport coilover is the kit that turns that touring set-up into something you can lean on.

Top Sport sits in the XYZ range as the weekend-track-day spec that still has to drive itself home. For a 1.6 or 2.0 petrol FD – and especially the diesels carrying extra mass over the nose – it tightens the body, gives you proper damper authority, and lets the i30 use its tyres instead of skating across them.

What this coilover does for your 2007-2012 Hyundai I 30 FD (TYPE 1)

Spring rates lift roughly 2 kg/mm over the factory settings and damping climbs 30-50%, and the i30 reacts immediately: turn-in sharpens, the nose stops diving under braking into roundabouts, and the rear stays planted when you trail the brake into a tightening corner. Across broken British tarmac the monotube valving soaks up sharp inputs that would skip a softer street coilover off-line – this is the part of the Top Sport brief XYZ is most proud of, and it shows on a UK road surface. Ride height drops to close the arch gap without wrecking the geometry on driveway ramps. On a circuit, the FD finally rotates on throttle pick-up instead of pushing wide, and tyre temperatures stay even across the tread because the dampers are actually controlling the spring rather than chasing it.

About the Top Sport coilover

Top Sport is the spec XYZ Racing built around their own track-day testing programme. Damping is adjustable so you can soften the kit for a long motorway leg and firm it back up at the paddock gate. The valving is calibrated to work with the stiffer spring rates rather than fighting them, which is where cheaper coilovers fall apart – over a kerb or a mid-corner ridge they skip, where the Top Sport keeps the tyre loaded. Construction is monotube with a threaded lower body for height adjustment independent of preload, so you can corner-weight the car without crashing into the bumpstops. Every setting on the kit comes out of XYZ’s own competition data: this is a road-and-track coilover engineered by people who run cars in anger, then detuned just enough to live with daily.
