XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Holden COMMODORE WAGON 1999-2006

The VT-VZ Commodore Wagon carries serious mass over its rear axle, and on a broken tarmac stage that rearward bias becomes the dominant problem – the live-feeling back end wants to skip wide over mid-corner ripples while the nose washes on turn-in. The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover for the Holden Commodore Wagon 1999-2006 is built specifically for sealed-surface stage work, where the suspension has to swallow expansion joints, raised manhole covers and patched cambers without unloading the contact patch.

This is the spec to run when a long-wheelbase Australian wagon is being used in anger on closed tarmac – VZ club rally, hill climbs, or fast targa-style events where compliance over road imperfection matters as much as outright body control.

What this coilover does for your 1999-2006 Holden Commodore Wagon

On a Commodore Wagon the front MacPherson struts and the rear semi-trailing geometry have to deal with a kerb weight north of 1,700 kg, much of it loaded behind the B-pillar with the tailgate down. The Tarmac Rally damping is tuned to absorb the jolt of larger inputs – the kind of compression hit that puts a road-spec coilover on the bump stop and lifts the inside rear – without the rebound stiffening up and skipping the tyre off the surface afterwards. You get a chassis that stays composed across mid-corner bumps, a rear axle that puts power down on exit rather than scrabbling, and front-end bite that survives a kerb strike. Ride height adjustment lets you set the wagon’s nose to balance out the rearward weight bias, and the spring and damper pairing keeps body roll predictable through long, loaded direction changes – the sort of cornering load a heavy estate generates on a flowing rally stage.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

The Tarmac Rally is a dedicated sealed-surface stage damper, not a fast-road kit pushed into rally service. The valving is built around impact absorption – the brief is to soak up the jolt of a big input, suppress the resulting body movement before it unsettles the chassis, and put the tyre back on the road with traction intact. The settings carry over directly from XYZ Racing’s tarmac rally programme, so the baseline damping curve has been arrived at on actual broken-surface stages rather than on smooth circuit asphalt. Construction follows XYZ’s standard rally hardware – height-adjustable threaded bodies, rebuildable internals and a damping character biased toward compliance over outright stiffness. The result is a coilover that lets a heavy car cover ground over poor tarmac without losing composure or chewing tyre.

Fitment for the Holden Commodore Wagon (1999-2006)

This kit fits the Holden Commodore Wagon, chassis code HO03, covering the model years 1999 through 2006 – the VT, VX, VY and VZ wagon generations. It is matched to the long-wheelbase wagon body specifically and uses the corresponding spring and damper rates for that bodyshell’s weight distribution. Confirm your chassis code before ordering if your car has been re-shelled or imported.
