XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Ford MONDEO 1996-2000

The first-generation Mondeo was a quietly capable thing on a B-road – long wheelbase, double wishbones up front, a multilink rear that genuinely worked – but the standard damping was tuned for motorway comfort, not for a closed special stage. Drop one onto a sealed-surface rally and the body roll arrives early, the front end washes wide on turn-in, and the rear takes a beat too long to settle between direction changes. That is the gap the XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover for the Ford Mondeo 1996-2000 is built to close.

This is the spec you fit when the car is going to see real stage use on tarmac – Manx-style closed-road events, sprint-and-hillclimb work, or a road-legal rally build that still has to survive the drive home. The settings come from XYZ Racing’s own tarmac rally programme rather than a generic fast-road map, which is the relevant distinction for an FO13 chassis that is otherwise short on off-the-shelf rally suspension.

What this coilover does for your 1996-2000 Ford Mondeo

Body control is the headline. The Mondeo’s softly-sprung double-wishbone front end stops diving under heavy braking into a hairpin, which keeps the front tyres loaded properly through the apex instead of skating across the surface on a half-compressed damper. The rear multilink stays planted on power, so the car rotates cleanly on throttle rather than stepping wide. Over broken tarmac – patched repairs, ridge joints, the kind of mid-corner bump that unsettles a road-sprung Mk1 – the damping absorbs the hit without pitching the chassis, so the contact patch stays put and the steering stays honest. Ride height comes down to a sensible stage ride height, and you get the consistency to drive the car hard for a whole stage without the dampers fading or the geometry wandering.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

The Tarmac Rally is XYZ Racing’s sealed-surface stage specification, not a fast-road kit relabelled. The damping is engineered specifically to absorb the impact of uneven pavement – the repeated medium-frequency hits that define tarmac stages – and to suppress the secondary shock travelling through the body when the car lands hard from a kerb or a crest. The objective is traction: by controlling how violently the chassis reacts to a surface input, the tyre stays in contact with the road for a higher percentage of the stage, which is where stage time is actually found. Construction and valving choices come straight out of XYZ Racing’s own tarmac rally testing programme, so the baseline settings reflect what has worked under competition conditions rather than a desk-engineered guess. Stability under load is the through-line – the car has to feel predictable when you are committing to a blind crest at speed.
