XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — BMW I8 4WD 2014-2020

The BM102-chassis i8’s front axle carries an electric motor that most 2014-2020 hybrid coupes never had to answer for, and that extra mass sits ahead of a carbon fibre tub built to save weight everywhere else. On a rutted tarmac stage that imbalance shows up under trail braking and at first turn-in, where the nose wants to dive before the rear axle’s petrol-driven power ever gets a say.

XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally coilover is built for exactly that kind of stage work – sealed-stage tarmac rally, not track-day lapping, where the surface changes camber and grip metre by metre. It’s tuned to control the I8 4WD’s front-to-rear weight transfer rather than simply stiffen the car, so both axles stay loaded when the throttle and brake inputs are asking different things of them inside the same corner.

What this coilover does for your 2014-2020 Bmw I8 4WD

Fitted to your I8 4WD, the biggest change you’ll feel is what happens when the front wheels meet a mid-corner ridge or pothole at speed – the damper is built to absorb that impact before it reaches the chassis, rather than letting the jolt travel through and unsettle the car’s body. That control matters more on this chassis than most, because the i8’s front-mounted motor mass means an unsettled nose costs you traction on both the steering axle and the electric motor’s ability to put power down. Suppressing body shock through the mid-corner also keeps the rear tyres loaded more consistently off a bump, which is where the petrol-driven rear axle actually finds traction on loose or patched tarmac. The net effect is a car that stays flatter and more predictable stage after stage, with the front and rear axles working with each other instead of against each other every time the road surface changes underneath you.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

The Tarmac Rally is XYZ Racing’s damper for exactly the discipline its name describes – sealed asphalt stages where the road surface is uneven, patched or badly cambered rather than smooth circuit tarmac. Its valving is built to soak up the impact of that surface without transmitting the jolt of a big compression straight into the chassis, which is what causes a car to skip or step sideways over a mid-corner ridge. By controlling that shock through the body, the damper keeps the contact patch loaded and lets the tyre keep generating traction instead of momentarily unloading over every imperfection. XYZ Racing set the base tuning using data drawn directly from its own tarmac rally programme, so the compression and rebound balance reflects what actually happens on a stage rather than a lap of a circuit. On a car built around stability rather than outright stiffness, that translates into handling that stays composed even as the road underneath keeps changing.
