The E38 7 Series was never built light. Even in six-cylinder 728i and 730i form, BMW’s flagship saloon carries close to two tonnes over a wheelbase stretched for rear-seat comfort, and the factory self-levelling air suspension was tuned to mask that mass rather than manage it. Delete the air struts and the platform still has to deal with the same weight transfer under braking and through direction changes – it just needs a coilover spring and damper that can actually control it.
XYZ Racing’s Top Sport coilover is built for exactly this kind of car: one that sees the odd track day but spends most of its life on the road. It raises damping force and spring rate over standard street settings so the E38’s body stays flatter under load, and keeps the ride usable for the daily commute afterwards.
What this coilover kit does for your 1995-2002 BMW 7 Series E38
Fitted to your 1995-2002 BMW 7 Series E38, the Top Sport kit lifts damping force by roughly 30 to 50 percent over a standard street tune, or adds around 2kg/mm to the spring rate, depending on how it’s set up. That extra control matters on a car this heavy: big compressions from motorway expansion joints and B-road dips get absorbed rather than passed straight into the body, and the shock body itself moves less under load, which keeps the tyre’s contact patch working instead of skipping across the surface. The result is a 7 Series that turns in with less lean, brakes with less nose-dive, and holds a line through a fast sweeper the way the E38’s chassis was always capable of but the factory air suspension never quite delivered. It’s damping and spring rate aimed at stability first, not a stripped-out ride.
About the Top Sport coilover
The Top Sport line is XYZ Racing’s road-and-track setup, built on damping and spring settings developed through the brand’s own Top Sport racing programme. Compared with a standard street coilover, it steps up both damping force and spring rate so the suspension can absorb hard hits, big bumps and mid-corner compressions without the shock body moving around and losing composure. That control translates directly into more consistent tyre contact and a more stable platform to brake and turn from. It’s aimed at owners who take their BMW 7 Series out for the occasional track day or a hard drive on a good road, then need the car back to daily-driver manners for the rest of the week. The settings prioritise vehicle stability over outright softness, which is the trade-off a heavier saloon like the E38 needs to make to hold a line under load.
Fitment for the Bmw 7 SERIES E38 6 CYL (NOT AIR STRUT) (1995-2002)
This kit is built for the BMW 7 Series E38, chassis code BM21-1, across the 1995 to 2002 production run. It’s specified for the six-cylinder cars running conventional coil suspension rather than the factory air-strut set-up fitted to some E38 derivatives, so check your car uses coil springs at all four corners before ordering. If you’re unsure which suspension your 728i or 730i left the factory with, the chassis code and engine layout are the two details to confirm.
