XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — BMW 3 SERIES E30 4 CYL OE φ51 (Front Welding Modified Rear Integrated) 1982-1992

The E30 3 Series’ semi-trailing-arm rear axle was never short of feedback on a broken tarmac stage – it changes camber under load, and running it stiff with no direction behind the valving just lets that geometry fight the driver instead of the road. XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally coilover for the Bmw 3 Series E30 4 CYL OE φ51 is set up specifically around that rear end: control the compression stroke before the axle starts hunting for grip over camber changes and crests.

This kit is calibrated for sealed-stage tarmac work, not loose-surface gravel – fast direction changes, compressions taken at speed, and a surface that punishes anything under-damped on the rebound stroke. On a four-cylinder E30, lighter over the front axle than its six-cylinder sibling, that translates to a rear end that stays flat over a crest instead of letting the nose dive into the following turn-in.

What this coilover does for your 1982-1992 Bmw 3 Series E30

Fitted to the front OE φ51 strut, modified via welding to accept the XYZ Racing cartridge, and the rear’s integrated shock and spring unit, this kit is tuned to deal with the kind of surface irregularity a UK tarmac stage throws at an early-80s chassis: patched B-roads, mid-corner ridges, unmarked crests. Where the standard set-up lets a big hit unsettle the body, this damper controls that motion so the tyre stays loaded and the contact patch doesn’t skip. On the road, that means the E30 holds its line through a compression instead of ballooning on its springs, and puts power down out of a hairpin instead of the rear axle hopping. The aim is stability under load rather than outright softness, because a rally E30 has to change direction on demand as much as it has to soak up a jolt.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

XYZ Racing built the Tarmac Rally line around one job: keeping the tyre in contact with a sealed surface that isn’t actually smooth. The valving is set up to absorb a heavy hit – a pothole repair, a raised drain cover, a crest taken flat – without letting that impact travel into the body and unsettle it. That control is what stops traction spiking and dropping away mid-corner, which on a stage is the difference between staying on line and catching a slide. The settings come directly from XYZ’s own tarmac rally programme rather than a road kit turned up a few clicks, so the compression and rebound curves are shaped around stage-pace inputs – hard braking into a hairpin, throttle back down early out of it – rather than commuting comfort. On this E30 fitment specifically, that shows up as a front end that resists dive under trail braking and a rear that stays settled the moment the power goes back on.

Fitment for the Bmw 3 Series E30 (1982-1992)

This kit fits the Bmw 3 Series E30, chassis code BM04, across the full 1982 to 1992 production run for four-cylinder cars. The front strut is OE φ51 diameter and needs the welding modification to accept the XYZ Racing cartridge, while the rear uses XYZ Racing’s integrated shock and spring assembly. Check your E30 is the four-cylinder variant before ordering, since six-cylinder cars run a different kit.
