The 8V S3 Sportback’s quattro system only puts power down as well as the suspension lets it, and on a gravel stage that means dampers that can absorb repeated, violent compressions without losing their composure between hits. Standard road-biased hardware folds quickly once the surface turns to loose stone, sand or washboard ruts, and the S3’s turbocharged four will happily spin a wheel the moment the contact patch is lost.
The Gravel Rally coilover is built around that exact problem: inverted-tube construction, long-travel shafts and long free-length springs, tuned for the specific abuse of rally cross rather than tarmac track work.
What this coilover does for your 2013-2020 Audi S3 Sportback
Fitted to this generation of S3 Sportback, the Gravel Rally coilover keeps the modified Rr Integrated rear end tracking through the kind of high-frequency, high-amplitude inputs a loose surface throws at a quattro car – compressions that would blow through a standard damper’s stroke long before the corner is out. The long stroke buys time for the wheel to follow the ground rather than skip across it, so the drivetrain keeps finding traction instead of hunting for it mid-corner. Extended free-length springs work with that stroke to control body movement over crests and into compressions without the spring coil-binding at the limit, which matters when a rally stage delivers that limit repeatedly, corner after corner, for the length of a stage rather than a single hot lap. The φ55 shaft body adds resistance to the bending load a hard gravel hit can put through a damper, so the unit keeps its shaft straight and its seals intact under the kind of side-loading a smooth circuit never produces.
About the Gravel Rally coilover
XYZ Racing built the Gravel Rally line specifically for rally and rally-cross use, where the surface underneath the car is the most punishing a chassis will ever see. An inverted-tube layout puts the heavier, more rigid tube uppermost, which keeps the working shaft better protected from the stones, mud and debris a gravel stage throws up, whatever the ground condition – dry sand, packed snow or loose silt. Stroke length and spring free length are both extended well beyond a road or circuit coilover’s spec, giving the damper room to soak up chassis vibration and absorb hits from fast, broken ground without bottoming out. That extra travel is what lets the car carry speed over crests and through compressions that would otherwise unsettle the chassis or spike cornering loads beyond what the tyre can use. Every spring rate in the range has been set and verified through an active rally racing programme, so the rates supplied come from stage running rather than a desk calculation.
Fitment for the Audi S3 Sportback (2013-2020)
This kit is specified for the Audi S3 Sportback 8V, chassis code AU52, across the full 2013-2020 production run, in φ55 modified Rr Integrated configuration to match this generation’s rear suspension layout. Confirm your car sits within that build window and uses the same integrated rear setup before ordering, as earlier or later 8V revisions can differ at the rear axle.
