Caliper render for this kit:

The XJ40 Sovereign arrived in 1986 as Jaguar’s first clean-sheet XJ since 1968, and it arrived heavy, with a kerb weight approaching 1,800 kg in fully loaded luxury specification. The 4.0-litre AJ16 variants that followed from 1989 produced genuine performance numbers, yet the front brake hardware tasked with managing all that mass was designed around 1980s comfort priorities. Nearly four decades of heat cycling, aged seals and accumulated fade have not improved the situation.
The XYZ Racing front big brake kit for the Jaguar SOVEREIGN (XJ40) across the 1986-1994 production run addresses the front axle directly, where the car’s nose-heavy weight distribution puts the greatest braking load. Three pad compounds allow specification against actual use, while a full caliper finish range gives restorers and fast-road drivers a say in what lives behind the alloy.
What this brake kit does for your 1986-1994 Jaguar SOVEREIGN (XJ40)
The XJ40’s front corners carry the weight of a longitudinally mounted straight-six, a full luxury cabin and the accumulated Sovereign specification, a combination that places significant deceleration demand on the front axle under any committed driving. The two-piece floating disc directly addresses the progressive fade and soft pedal feel that aged original-spec calipers develop after sustained fast-road use on a car of this mass. The hollow-vane rotor sheds heat through increased internal airflow, the floating bell keeps it flat under load, and the lighter rotating assembly trims unsprung mass for sharper response. Braided lines are included, restoring the firm pedal the aged factory hoses have lost.
Three compounds calibrate the system. Street is the quiet, low-dust default for daily and fast A-road use. Sport adds bite and a wider heat range for spirited driving. Racing is the dedicated track compound, opening the car to the circuit-day sessions increasingly common in the classic Jaguar calendar.
About the front big brake kit
The hollow-body forged caliper is standard, paired with a two-piece floating disc, a genuine performance step over the original Girling or Teves hardware rather than a like-for-like OEM replacement. Discs are offered drilled or slotted at the same price, and centre bell upgrades come as two-tone anodizing in five colours, or titanium, selectable at checkout.
Included painted caliper colours are Red, Yellow, Gold, Black and Anodized Black at no extra cost, a practical consideration for owners presenting cars at Jaguar events or running quality aftermarket alloys where the caliper sits clearly in view. A Custom Color in any Pantone is £150, and the premium polished-forged and candy ranges (Titanium, Polished Gold, Polished Silver, plus Candy Teal, Candy Blue, Candy Red and Candy Orange) extend the palette. For circuit use, the optional Hollow Racing caliper deletes the dust cover, is rated to 1000C and carries a two-year warranty. The kit targets the front axle and is developed for the XJ40 Sovereign platform across its full production span.
Fitment for the Jaguar SOVEREIGN (XJ40) (1986-1994)
This kit is listed for the Jaguar SOVEREIGN (XJ40) across the complete 1986 to 1994 production run, covering both the 3.6-litre AJ6 cars and the 4.0-litre AJ16 models introduced from the 1989 model year. Confirm your specific variant and year against the product listing before finalising pad compound and caliper colour selection.

Choosing your spec
Every kit is built to order around the choices you make above. Here is what each option actually changes, so you can spec yours with confidence.
Brake pads — Street, Sport or Racing
Every kit ships with a full set of high-performance pads; the compound is your call.
Street is the right default for fast-road driving — a strong, progressive cold bite with low noise, low dust and long disc life. Sport raises the working temperature and adds bite and fade resistance for hard road use and the occasional track day, while still behaving on a cold morning. Racing is a track compound built for sustained abuse: huge fade resistance and bite once heat is in it, at the cost of more noise and dust when cold. Match the pad to how hard you actually use the brakes — there is no benefit to a race pad that never gets up to temperature.
Caliper grade — Hollow vs Hollow Racing
Hollow is the standard caliper on every kit: a hollow-body forged caliper, lighter than a solid one, fitted with a dust cover and backed by a 5-year oil-leak warranty. For most fast-road and spirited track use it is all the caliper you need.
Hollow Racing is the track-grade upgrade. It runs the same hollow body but without a dust cover (so there is nothing to melt at sustained high temperature), uses a twin-metal piston that isolates heat travelling from the disc to the oil seal, and is rated to 1000°C. Available 286–380mm (front). Warranty is 2 years on oil leaks and 10 years on appearance. Built for professional racing and repeated track days.

Caliper colour & finish
Painted colours (Red, Yellow, Gold, Black, Anodized Black) are included at no cost. Want an exact match to your car? Custom Color (+£150) paints the calipers to any Pantone code you supply (15–20 day lead time).
Polished Forged finishes are the flagship: a forged caliper given a mirror-polished surface treatment that shifts colour with the viewing angle. Beyond the looks, the polished surface dissipates heat better, resists rust and stands up to the weather. Choose Titanium (neochrome, +£350), Polished Gold (+£300) or Polished Silver (+£250). They look their best paired with a titanium centre bell. Care: clean only with a dilute neutral cleaner or water.
Candy colours (+£200) use a deep candy-paint and polishing process for a mirror-reflection, boutique finish — pick Teal, Blue, Red or Orange (shown below right).

Centre bells
The centre bell is the CNC-machined aluminium hat that joins the disc to the hub. The standard anodized centre bell is included. The Two-tone bell (+£200) adds an anodized accent ring — choose Red, Yellow, Orange, Purple or Silver right here at checkout. The Titanium centre bell (+£500) is a forged titanium bell (bolts not included) that finishes off the polished-forged look.
