XYZ Racing Drag Racing Coilovers — BMW 02 SERIES φ45 welding 1966-1977

The BMW 02 Series’ short wheelbase and light kerb weight make it one of the more unpredictable platforms to launch hard off the line – weight transfer happens fast, and without a way to manage it the driven wheels spin before the tyre ever loads up properly. The XYZ Racing Drag Racing coilover for the 02 Series (1966-1977) is built around that exact problem, using a φ45 weld-in sleeve to give the front strut housing a mounting point this chassis never had from the factory.

Where a fast-road or track coilover chases balance through a corner, this kit is set up for one motion: getting weight onto the rear tyres the instant the clutch drops. It suits 1502, 1602, 1802 and 2002-generation cars running 0-400m passes rather than circuit or road use.

What this coilover does for your 1966-1977 BMW 02 Series

On a 02 Series pointed down a drag strip, the limiting factor usually isn’t power – it’s getting that power to the tarmac before the rear tyres light up. This kit lets you set front and rear ride height independently, shifting static weight rearward onto the driven axle so the compression load on the rear tyre builds the moment you release the clutch. That extra compression cuts down how long the wheel spends spinning free before it hooks up, which is the difference between a clean 60-foot time and a smoky one. Because the 02 Series is such a light car to start with, even a modest shift in front-to-rear weight bias has an outsized effect on launch – this platform rewards that kind of adjustment more than a heavier saloon would. The φ45 weld-in construction also keeps the mounting point solid against the strut tower, so none of that transferred load gets lost to a bolt-in adapter flexing under launch.

About the Drag Racing coilover

XYZ Racing built this range around one job: getting a car off the line over 0-400 metres, regardless of whether power goes through the front, rear or all four wheels. The core of the design is independent ride-height adjustment that lets you bias static weight toward whichever axle is doing the driving – on a rear-wheel-drive platform like the 02 Series, that means loading the rear. More weight sitting on the driven tyre means more compression in that tyre’s contact patch at launch, and more compression means less time spent with the wheel spinning free before it bites. XYZ Racing frames this as a stability point as much as a traction one – a car that hooks up cleanly and consistently is more predictable through a run than one riding on grip it doesn’t have yet. This is a strut rebuild rather than a bolt-in cartridge: the φ45 collar has to be welded to the existing strut housing, standard practice for a chassis this old that was never designed with coilover mounting in mind.

Fitment for the BMW 02 Series (1966-1977)

This kit is specced for the BMW 02 Series (chassis code BM81) built between 1966 and 1977 – the 1502, 1602, 1802 and 2002 family. Because the front strut housing needs the φ45 sleeve welded on, fitment isn’t a straight bolt-in job and is best carried out by a shop comfortable working on a car of this age.

The coilovers are specially designed for 0~400 drag racing such as FWD, RWD or 4WD models. The setting allows vehicle to change the front and rear weight according to the transmission wheel in instant driving, and force the transmission tire having greater compression, which can reduce the idle time of wheel and improve the stability of the vehicle under high speed.
