XYZ Racing Drift Spec Coilovers — BMW 8 SERIES E31 8 CYL φ55 welding 1990-1999

The E31 8 Series carries its 8-cylinder engine a long way forward of the front axle, and that nose-heavy, two-tonne GT layout is exactly why owners are turning this big coupe into a serious drift platform rather than leaving it as a boulevard cruiser. XYZ Racing’s Drift Spec coilover kit for the BM113 chassis, in the φ55 welding fitment, is built for that conversion: getting a heavy grand tourer to hold an angle at speed instead of ploughing wide or snapping into oversteer.

This isn’t a fast-road spring and damper upgrade. The Drift Spec valving is set up to stabilise the body through high-speed direction changes so the E31 settles into an angle rather than fighting the driver for it, with ride height dropped low enough that the geometry keeps working through a full bump stroke instead of running out of travel mid-slide.

What this coilover does for your 1990-1999 BMW 8 Series E31 8 CYL Φ55 Welding

Lower the E31 on this kit and the first difference you feel is how much less the nose dives and the body rolls under the load changes that used to catch this chassis out mid-drift. The V8’s weight sitting over the front axle wants to keep the car travelling straight; the Drift Spec’s firmer damping works against that inertia, letting you initiate rotation with less steering input and hold the resulting angle instead of the rear stepping out unpredictably. Because the kit is set up around a proper bump stroke rather than a show-car ride height, the suspension keeps doing its job through the full range of a slide instead of topping or bottoming out the moment the outside corner loads up. On a chassis this heavy, that’s the difference between a controlled transition into an angle and a snap you’re constantly correcting for.

About the Drift Spec coilover

The Drift Spec range is XYZ Racing’s dedicated drift-discipline coilover, built around one job: keeping the car settled once you’ve deliberately broken traction. Damping and spring rates are calibrated to resist the body movement that normally accompanies a fast direction change, so the E31 can be steered into a controlled angle instead of lurching through one. Ride height drops enough to lower the centre of gravity and sharpen turn-in, but the kit is built around a bump stroke long enough to keep the dampers working properly once the suspension compresses mid-slide, rather than unsettling the car by running out of travel. On this φ55 welding-spec BM113 fitment, that means a strut body designed to be welded directly into the factory shock towers, giving a level of location precision a bolt-in perch can’t match once the car is being driven sideways at real speed.

Fitment for the BMW 8 Series E31 8 CYL Φ55 Welding (1990-1999)

This kit is built for the BM113-coded E31 8 Series, the 8-cylinder cars built between 1990 and 1999, in the φ55 welding configuration rather than a bolt-in strut. Confirm your car is the V8-engined E31 before ordering, as the welding-spec strut body is dimensioned to this chassis’s shock towers and needs fabrication to fit.

What buyers also search for

  • BMW 8 Series E31 drift setup for holding an angle at speed, not just fast-road handling
  • BM113 coilover kit built around bump stroke and body control rather than static ride height alone
  • BMW E31 V8 drift coilovers for owners converting a heavy GT into a serious drift car
  • XYZ Racing Drift Spec damping tuned for the E31’s nose-heavy weight transfer

This φ55 welding-spec kit for the BM113 comes set up exactly as described above – configure your spring rate and build yours below.

This suspension is designed for Drift race especially. With its special design, it helps the racers stabilize the vehicle body while in high speed turning in order to make a perfect angle. It can also enhance drifting performance. After lowing the ride height with proper bump stroke, you will realize how we made the drift controlling to the excellent condition.

Top mounts included with your kit

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

Front

  • Pillow ball + rubber top mountPillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
