XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — BMW 8 SERIES E31 8 CYL φ55 welding 1990-1999

The E31 8 Series was BMW’s grand tourer, not a rally car – a long-wheelbase 2+2 coupe built for autobahn cruising on standard-fit struts, with none of the underbody clearance or long-travel geometry a gravel stage demands. Converting one for gravel or rallycross work means replacing that GT-tuned strut architecture entirely, and the φ55 welding-type construction of this kit reflects that reality: the insert is welded into the OE housing rather than bolted to a coilover-ready perch, because the E31 was never built with one.

For anyone running an 8-cylinder 8 Series in historic rally or rallycross competition, the Gravel Rally spec is built around stroke and shock absorption rather than outright stiffness. It’s the option to reach for when the car needs to survive repeated compression events on rutted, loose surfaces without the front or rear axle bottoming out.

What this coilover does for your 1990-1999 BMW 8 Series

On loose surfaces, the E31’s weight transfers hard through the chassis every time the car crests a rut or lands off a compression, and the 8-cylinder engine only adds to the load the front axle carries into every landing. The Gravel Rally coilover’s long stroke gives the axle somewhere to go before the damper tops or bottoms out, which is the difference between the car staying planted and the suspension slamming into its bump stops at speed. The inverted tube layout keeps the working shaft shielded from the sand, mud and stone a gravel stage throws up, so damping control doesn’t degrade mid-run the way a conventional strut’s exposed shaft can. Spring rates are set for the vibration and repeated high-speed bounce of a rally surface rather than tarmac grip, which matters on a car this size – too soft and the 8 Series wallows through compressions, too stiff and it skips over the loose surface instead of tracking it.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing built the Gravel Rally line specifically for rally and rallycross use, where the road surface is the most punishing a damper will see – sandstone, snow, silt, and everything in between on the same stage. The inverted tube design puts the larger-diameter tube on the outside and the shaft on the inside, protecting the working surface from stage debris and holding seal life longer than a standard strut manages in the same conditions. Stroke and spring length are both extended over a road or track-focused build, giving the damper enough travel to absorb chassis vibration and the aggressive hits that come from bouncing over rough, high-speed sections without running out of travel. That extra length still has to control real cornering loads – the G-force a rally car generates turning in on loose or mixed-grip surfaces is not small, and the damper has to hold its line through that without losing composure. XYZ Racing’s own rally team sets and tests every spring rate on this line in actual competition rather than on a bench, which is why the rates land where a stage car needs them rather than where a road-going equivalent would.

Fitment for the BMW 8 Series (1990-1999)

This kit is built for the E31-chassis BMW 8 Series (internal reference BM113), 8-cylinder variants, produced across the 1990 to 1999 model run. Because the E31 strut housing was never designed to accept a bolt-in coilover perch, this kit uses φ55 welding-type construction – the insert is fitted by welding into the existing OE housing rather than a direct bolt-on swap. Confirm your car’s engine variant against the 8-cylinder spec before ordering, and factor the welding-in step into your build schedule rather than treating it as a straight strut swap.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

Top mounts included with your kit

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

Front

  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
