XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — BMW 3 SERIES E46 4 CYL 4WD (Modified Rear Integrated) 1998-2005

The E46’s standard rear subframe and damper mounts were never designed to survive the repeated, violent compressions of a gravel stage, which is why this fitment for the 4WD-converted, modified-rear-integrated Bmw 3 Series E46 pairs a purpose-built mounting solution with the coilover rather than a straight bolt-in swap. On a car already reworked at the rear axle to put drive down through four wheels, the last thing you want is a damper designed around a different subframe entirely.

XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally coilover is built for exactly this scenario: gravel-stage and rallycross running on a four-cylinder E46 across the 1998-2005 production span, where the surface changes metre to metre and the suspension has to keep the tyre in contact with whatever is underneath it – sandstone one corner, loose silt the next, hard-pack after that.

What this coilover does for your 1998-2005 Bmw 3 Series

Fit this coilover to the rear-integrated 4WD E46 and the first thing you notice is how much composure the long-stroke damper adds over compressions that would otherwise kick the rear axle sideways. The inverted tube layout keeps the working rod shielded from the sand, mud and stone thrown up by the front wheels, so the damper keeps working consistently through a whole stage rather than degrading a few kilometres in. The long spring, paired with that extended stroke, soaks up chassis vibration transmitted through the modified rear subframe before it reaches the driver – which matters more on a car where the rear mounting has already been reworked once. Under hard cornering load the setup is built to bear the G-force spikes that come with pushing a 4WD E46 through a gravel corner rather than backing off for it.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing developed the Gravel Rally coilover specifically for rally and rallycross competition, where road conditions are about as hostile as motorsport gets. The inverted tube construction was chosen to cope with the variety of surfaces a stage throws at a car in a single run – sandstone, snow, loose silt – rather than being tuned for one type of grip. Stroke length and spring length are both extended well beyond a typical road or track coilover, giving the damper the travel to absorb chassis vibration from a bouncy, high-speed gravel road without bottoming out or losing control of the wheel. That extra travel also has to cope with the extreme cornering G-force a rally car generates on loose surfaces, where the car is sliding as much as it’s gripping. Every spring rate offered in this range has been set and validated by an active rally racing team, not calculated on a bench, so the rates reflect what actually survives a full stage rather than a single hard lap.

Fitment for the Bmw 3 Series E46 4 CYL 4WD (Modified Rr Integrated) (1998-2005)

This kit is specified for the BM32-chassis Bmw 3 Series E46, four-cylinder, 4WD variant with the modified, rear-integrated mounting configuration, covering model years 1998 to 2005. Because the rear axle on this variant has already been reworked for the 4WD conversion, confirm your car matches this exact configuration rather than a standard RWD E46 before ordering.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
