XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — BMW 3 SERIES E46 6 CYL 1998-2005

The E46 3 Series was already a rally-proven shape before XYZ Racing built a coilover around it – works and privateer cars ran this chassis on closed tarmac stages across Europe through the early 2000s, and the near 50/50 weight split and long-for-its-class wheelbase are exactly why. The Tarmac Rally coilover for the 6-cylinder E46 (1998-2005) is set up for that specific job: sealed-stage tarmac events, where compression speed and consistent traction over a broken surface matter more than a low, flat static ride height.

Where a road coilover chases a planted feel on smooth tarmac, this kit is calibrated for what a rally stage actually throws at a chassis – crests, patched repairs, mid-corner camber changes. It’s built to keep the E46’s rear axle loaded and the front end following the road surface instead of skipping across it.

What this coilover kit does for your 1998-2005 BMW 3 Series E46

Fit this to a 6-cylinder E46 – 323i, 328i or 330i generation – and the first thing you notice on a stage is how much more of the road surface the tyre stays in contact with. The damper’s stroke is tuned to soak up sharp, high-frequency hits – crests, patched sections, camber changes – that would otherwise kick the rear axle sideways mid-corner. That control matters on this chassis specifically because the E46’s multi-link rear geometry is sensitive to how the subframe loads under compression; get the damping wrong here and the car steps out under power on a bumpy exit. Ride height and spring rate adjust independently, so the same kit can be set up loose and compliant for a fast, open stage or tightened for a technical one without swapping parts. The result is a chassis that puts power down earlier out of a rough corner and holds its line through a rutted section instead of skating across it.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

XYZ Racing built the Tarmac Rally coilover to deal with rough, uneven tarmac at speed rather than the smooth surfaces a circuit kit is set up for. The damper is calibrated to absorb sharp, high-frequency impacts – broken road edges, patched repairs, mid-corner bumps – without transmitting the full shock straight through the body, which keeps the tyre loaded and traction consistent instead of letting the wheel skip on landing. That impact absorption is the core of the design: rather than running maximum stiffness for outright grip on a smooth surface, the valving is set up to control body movement over rough ground while keeping the car settled and predictable through a corner. The damping curves and spring-rate pairing come directly from XYZ’s own tarmac rally programme – settings shaped by what actually held up across real stages, not a circuit map adapted after the fact.

Fitment for the BMW 3 Series E46 (1998-2005)

This kit is built for the 6-cylinder BMW 3 Series E46, chassis code BM27, covering the 1998 to 2005 model years. It’s specced for the straight-six cars rather than the 4-cylinder range, so confirm your engine variant before ordering.

Spec here comes from XYZ’s own tarmac programme rather than a circuit kit adapted after the fact, so pick your ride height and spring rate to match the stage, not a generic road setting – configure yours below.

This damper is designed for Tarmac Rally; it can absorb the impact of uneven pavement. It is able to absorb the jolt when across a big bumps, effectively suppress shock body and to increase tire’s traction. Vehicle stability makes you can experience perfect handling. • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
