XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — BMW 3 SERIES E30 6 CYL OE φ51 (Front Welding OE Rear Separated) 1982-1992

The E30’s straight-six nose weight and live rear axle make it a demanding car on a closed tarmac stage, where compression loads change from apex to apex and a soft factory strut lets the nose dive under trail braking. XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally coilover for the 6-cylinder E30 (BM06-1, OE φ51 strut) replaces that unit with a sealed-stage set-up built for rally pace rather than road comfort.

On a stage the surface changes underneath you every few hundred metres, from patched tarmac to a rain-cut rut, and standard suspension was never built to keep the inside wheel loaded through that. This kit is tuned to soak up the big compressions without kicking the body off line, so drive stays with the rear axle out of the corner instead of fighting for grip.

What this coilover does for your 1982-1992 BMW 3 Series E30

Fitted to the 6-cylinder E30, this coilover keeps the straight-six’s extra front-end weight controlled under braking into a hairpin, rather than letting the nose dive and unload the outside front tyre mid-corner. The front strut uses a welded OE-style top mount, so ride height and geometry stay fixed once installed, which suits a car that gets trailered and rebuilt between events rather than adjusted trackside. At the rear, the separated spring-and-damper layout lets damping be set independently of ride height, useful on an E30 where rear axle travel and stage surface both vary within a single event. Big-bump absorption is the headline benefit: the damper is calibrated to swallow a mid-corner crest or a rutted braking zone without the body kicking sideways, so the rear stays planted and traction off the corner doesn’t disappear. On road-registered stage cars this also settles the E30’s tendency to skip over broken surfaces at speed, giving the driver a more predictable car to place on the exit.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally line is built around one job: keeping the car composed when the road surface stops being smooth. Valving is set to absorb impacts from broken or uneven tarmac without transmitting the jolt straight into the chassis, which is what causes a rally car to skip and lose contact patch over a mid-stage crest. Damping controls body movement through those hits rather than letting the chassis kick, so the tyre keeps working and traction stays consistent through the corner instead of depending on the last bump. The result is a car that feels planted rather than nervous when the surface turns rough, which is the difference between carrying speed through a compression and lifting off. Every setting in this range comes out of XYZ’s own tarmac rally programme, refined stage by stage, and applied here to the 6-cylinder E30’s specific strut dimensions and OE φ51 mounting.

Fitment for the Bmw 3 Series E30 (1982-1992)

This kit is built for the 6-cylinder BMW 3 Series E30 (chassis code BM06-1) across the full 1982-1992 production run, matching the OE φ51 strut diameter. The front strut is a welded OE-style unit, and the rear uses a separated spring-and-damper arrangement matching the factory layout, so fitment follows the standard E30 strut and shock mounting points.
