XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Alfa Romeo 156 4 CYL 1997-2007

The 156’s front double-wishbone layout already sets it apart from most front-drive saloons of its generation – sharper turn-in, less compromise between comfort and control than the strut-based competition. On a closed tarmac stage, where the surface can go from smooth asphalt to a patched, cambered farm road in the space of one corner, that geometry only pays off if the damper underneath it can keep the tyre loaded through every crest, compression and mid-corner ripple. XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally coilover is built for exactly that brief on the 4-cylinder 156.

This isn’t a track-day setup wearing a rally label. Stage driving throws big, sudden inputs at a chassis – a hard landing off a crest, a kerb strike taken flat, a compression mid-braking zone – and the 4 CYL 156’s lighter nose compared with the V6 GTA means the front axle reacts fast when it’s asked to. The damping here is tuned to control that without turning every stage into a fight with torque steer under power out of tight hairpins.

What this coilover brings to your 1997-2007 Alfa Romeo 156 4 CYL

Fitted to the AL07 chassis, this kit keeps the front wishbones doing their job when the road surface stops cooperating. Big-hit absorption is the priority: a rally stage delivers repeated large-amplitude compressions that a road-biased damper simply can’t rebound from cleanly, and this setup is calibrated to soak that impact up rather than transmit it straight into the body shell. Suppressing that shock through the chassis keeps the tyre’s contact patch planted rather than skipping across ruts and bumps, which is where actual traction is won or lost on loose or patched tarmac. Adjustable ride height also lets you set ground clearance to suit a specific stage’s surface rather than a compromise setting for road use.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

XYZ Racing built the Tarmac Rally line specifically around the demands of sealed-stage rally driving rather than adapting a road or circuit product. The core job is absorbing the impact of an uneven surface – the big bumps and mid-corner jolts that stage roads throw up – without letting that energy travel into the body and unsettle the car mid-corner. Controlling that shock transfer is what keeps the tyre gripping instead of skating, and it’s what gives a driver the stable, predictable platform needed to commit to a line on a surface they’ve only seen once, at speed, on pace notes. The valving and spring settings in this kit come directly from XYZ’s own tarmac rally programme rather than a lab estimate, carried across to suit the 156’s specific front and rear geometry.

Fitment for the Alfa Romeo 156 4 CYL (1997-2007)

This kit is built for the AL07 chassis code covering the 4-cylinder 156 range from 1997 to 2007, distinct from the heavier V6-engined GTA variant. Front and rear geometry has been set up around this car’s double-wishbone front and multi-link rear layout, so confirm your 156 is a 4-cylinder Twin Spark model before ordering.
