Caliper render for this kit:

The 940’s kerb weight is the figure that matters here. This is a live-axle, rear-drive Volvo that left the factory heavy and got heavier still in estate trim, on tow-bar duty and under a full load. The rear axle does real thermal work on a car this size, and the standard rear brakes were specified for a 1990s family hauler, not for a tuned redblock turbo or a hard-driven fast-road build. The XYZ Racing Hollow Rear Brake Kit gives the back axle of your Volvo 940 the disc area and the cooling it should have had.
Matched to the OE161 platform across the 1990-1998 run, the kit pairs hollow-vane discs with a multi-piston caliper and a choice of pad compound. The hollow-vane disc strips unsprung mass off a solid rear axle, which is exactly where weight hurts ride and traction most, while adding the thermal headroom a heavy rear-drive Volvo needs under repeated heavy stops.
What this big brake kit does for your 1990-1998 Volvo 940 (OE161)
The first thing you feel on a heavy 940 is rear-end composure under braking. More rear disc area and a stiffer caliper sharpen pedal response and hold bite once the brakes are hot, which is where the factory rear setup starts to fade on a loaded or tuned car. The hollow-vane discs run cooler and lighter, so the live rear axle settles faster over mid-corner bumps instead of pattering. Three pad compounds – Street, Sport and Racing – let you match the kit to how the car is actually used, from a daily redblock to a fast-road or grassroots motorsport build. Caliper colour reads cleanly behind the wheel and ties into the rest of the build.
About the Hollow Rear Big Brake Kit
The Hollow in the name refers to the disc itself: a hollow-vane, two-piece floating rotor with material taken out of the internal structure to cut rotating and unsprung mass while keeping the friction face full size. Supplied as a matched left-and-right pair, less weight at the wheel means the disc heats and sheds heat faster and asks less of the rear suspension over uneven surfaces. The kit is built around a fixed multi-piston caliper that clamps more evenly than the factory sliding unit. That caliper is hollow-cast as standard, with a Hollow Racing upgrade for track and drift use that drops the dust cover, is rated to 1000C and carries a two-year warranty. It accepts three pad compounds: the Street compound suits quiet everyday road use, the Sport compound adds bite for harder driving, and the Racing compound holds its friction level at the temperatures a track or drift session puts through a heavy car. Discs come drilled or slotted at the same price, and braided lines keep the pedal firm under heat. Finishes are Red, Yellow, Gold, Black or Anodized Black at no extra cost, with Custom Color in any Pantone, polished-forged Titanium, Polished Gold or Polished Silver, and candy finishes in Teal, Blue, Red or Orange, so the caliper can be specified to suit the build rather than left as an afterthought.

Choosing your spec
Every kit is built to order around the choices you make above. Here is what each option actually changes, so you can spec yours with confidence.
Brake pads — Street, Sport or Racing
Every kit ships with a full set of high-performance pads; the compound is your call.
Street is the right default for fast-road driving — a strong, progressive cold bite with low noise, low dust and long disc life. Sport raises the working temperature and adds bite and fade resistance for hard road use and the occasional track day, while still behaving on a cold morning. Racing is a track compound built for sustained abuse: huge fade resistance and bite once heat is in it, at the cost of more noise and dust when cold. Match the pad to how hard you actually use the brakes — there is no benefit to a race pad that never gets up to temperature.
Caliper grade — Hollow vs Hollow Racing
Hollow is the standard caliper on every kit: a hollow-body forged caliper, lighter than a solid one, fitted with a dust cover and backed by a 5-year oil-leak warranty. For most fast-road and spirited track use it is all the caliper you need.
Hollow Racing is the track-grade upgrade. It runs the same hollow body but without a dust cover (so there is nothing to melt at sustained high temperature), uses a twin-metal piston that isolates heat travelling from the disc to the oil seal, and is rated to 1000°C. Available 330–356mm (rear). Warranty is 2 years on oil leaks and 10 years on appearance. Built for professional racing and repeated track days.

Caliper colour & finish
Painted colours (Red, Yellow, Gold, Black, Anodized Black) are included at no cost. Want an exact match to your car? Custom Color (+£150) paints the calipers to any Pantone code you supply (15–20 day lead time).
Polished Forged finishes are the flagship: a forged caliper given a mirror-polished surface treatment that shifts colour with the viewing angle. Beyond the looks, the polished surface dissipates heat better, resists rust and stands up to the weather. Choose Titanium (neochrome, +£350), Polished Gold (+£300) or Polished Silver (+£250). They look their best paired with a titanium centre bell. Care: clean only with a dilute neutral cleaner or water.
Candy colours (+£200) use a deep candy-paint and polishing process for a mirror-reflection, boutique finish — pick Teal, Blue, Red or Orange (shown below right).

Centre bells
The centre bell is the CNC-machined aluminium hat that joins the disc to the hub. The standard anodized centre bell is included. The Two-tone bell (+£200) adds an anodized accent ring — choose Red, Yellow, Orange, Purple or Silver right here at checkout. The Titanium centre bell (+£500) is a forged titanium bell (bolts not included) that finishes off the polished-forged look.
