XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Volkswagen GOLF MK2 1985-1992

Point a Mk2 Golf at a loose gravel stage and the limits of its factory suspension show up at the first crest: short strut travel, a torsion-beam rear that skips across washboard, and damping never meant for sustained abuse off the tarmac. The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover for the Volkswagen GOLF MK2 is built for exactly that environment – a long-travel, long-spring kit developed for gravel-stage rally and rallycross rather than the road.

This is not a lowering kit. It is a stage tool: inverted-tube dampers and extended stroke that let the chassis breathe over ruts, jumps and silt while keeping the contact patch loaded. For a 1985-1992 Golf MK2 being prepped for loose-surface competition, it answers the one thing the standard setup cannot – keeping all four corners working when the surface stops cooperating.

What this coilover does for your 1985-1992 Volkswagen GOLF MK2

On a gravel stage the gains are immediate. The long stroke lets the front struts soak up impacts that would bottom a road setup, so the MK2 stays settled over crests and corrugations instead of pattering and running wide. The extended springs keep the wheels planted as the chassis pitches, which means traction out of slow hairpins and stability when the car is loaded up mid-corner under big lateral loads. The inverted-tube construction puts the larger-diameter tube at the top, where side loads are highest, reducing strut flex and holding damping consistent as stage temperatures climb. Spring rates are set for loose surfaces rather than tarmac, so the rear stays compliant enough to follow the ground instead of skating across it.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally series is engineered specifically for rally and rallycross, where the surface – sandstone, snow, silt, broken gravel – is the most punishing in motorsport and the damper carries more of the workload than almost any other part on the car. XYZ Racing builds these around an inverted-tube layout chosen to cope with constantly changing terrain, paired with long stroke and long springs so the suspension can absorb sustained chassis vibration and attack high-speed bouncy sections without running out of travel. The same architecture is designed to bear the extreme cornering forces a rally car generates when it is thrown into a bend on low grip. Every spring rate in the range has been validated by XYZ Racing’s rally team rather than chosen on paper, so the baseline settings reflect what actually holds together on a stage.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
