XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Porsche BOXSTER (986) 1996-2004

The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover for the Porsche 986 Boxster starts from a genuinely unusual platform: a mid-engine roadster with near 50:50 weight distribution and a flat-six sitting just behind the driver. On gravel, that weight placement is a real asset – the engine mass is centralised between the axles in a way few cars manage from the factory. The challenge is that the 986’s suspension geometry was engineered for sealed tarmac and the clearances that come with it, not the ruts and compressions of a rally stage.

Running a low-slung roadster on gravel is a commitment, and the stock geometry’s stroke limitations and ride height are the immediate obstacles. These coilovers address both – inverted-tube units with long stroke and long-travel springs that keep the 986’s flat underbody away from stage debris while preserving the natural handling balance the mid-engine layout provides.

What this coilover does for your 1996-2004 Porsche BOXSTER (986)

The 986’s mid-mounted flat-six gives this car a low centre of gravity that the Gravel Rally kit is calibrated to exploit rather than compromise. The long-stroke, long-spring configuration adds substantial wheel travel over the standard setup – critical when a low-clearance roadster is navigating terrain that would destroy factory suspension within metres. The inverted tube design places the main damper body at the top mount and the sliding rod at the wheel end, keeping the critical seals away from the gravel, silt, and mud that would accelerate wear on a conventional strut. Under hard direction changes, where the 986’s slight rear bias can encourage rotation on loose surfaces, the spring rates absorb extreme G-force loads in corners without pitching the car off its line. All spring rate settings were validated by XYZ’s rally racing team across sandstone, snow, and silt stages.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally is XYZ Racing’s specification for stage rally and rallycross – the most demanding road surfaces in competitive motorsport. Where a fast-road or circuit coilover is calibrated for consistent tarmac conditions, this unit is built on the assumption that the surface will actively unsettle the car. The inverted tube design protects the working seals from contamination found on loose stages, extending service life in conditions that would rapidly degrade a conventional shock absorber. Extended stroke length and longer springs handle the compressive loads generated by high-speed compressions and sudden crests – the kind of input that bottoms a standard strut within metres. Spring rate settings were tested under genuine rally racing conditions rather than tuned on a static rig, so the calibration reflects actual competition loads across multiple surface types. The design accommodates the aggressive G-force demands of high-speed cornering on gravel while keeping enough travel in reserve for the unpredictable compressions that define loose-surface competition.

Fitment for the Porsche BOXSTER (986) (1996-2004)

This kit covers the full Porsche 986 Boxster production run from 1996 through 2004, fitting the platform across all specification levels within the generation. The 986 uses specific strut mounting geometry at both ends, and this kit is designed to fit the production subframe without modification. Confirm your chassis code before ordering if the car has seen any previous suspension work.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
