XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Mazda 323 WAGON (TYPE1) 1998-2004

Gravel stages don’t care that the 323 Wagon TYPE1 started life as a family estate. Loose surface, blind crests, and a suspension that has to survive repeated hard landings without folding are the reality of stage driving, and a road-biased coilover gives up within a handful of kilometres on that kind of ground. The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover is built around that specific problem rather than around lap times.

This is a damper built for sandstone, snow and silt rather than tarmac, and for the TYPE1’s estate-length wheelbase and chassis mass moving over rough ground at speed. It replaces the factory strut on the Mazda 323 Wagon with a unit designed to keep working after the fifth big hit of a stage, not just the first.

What this coilover does for your 1998-2004 Mazda 323 Wagon

The long stroke and long spring at the heart of this kit give the TYPE1’s suspension far more travel to work with than the standard set-up allows, which matters when a gravel crest drops the car onto its bump stops without warning. That extra travel is what keeps the tyres tracking the road surface through repeated compressions instead of skipping across it. The inverted tube design is aimed squarely at this kind of abuse, built to cope with sand, snow and silt without the internals packing up under sustained lateral and vertical loading. On a car that was never engineered for stage work, that changes how the 323 Wagon behaves when the road turns to gravel underneath it: less bottoming out, more consistent contact, and a chassis that stays composed as speed and G-force build through a turn.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing developed this damper specifically for rally and rallycross use, where road conditions swing between sandstone, snow and silt inside the same event, sometimes the same stage. The inverted tube construction was chosen to handle that variability, giving the damper a structure that copes with aggressive, high-frequency inputs rather than the smooth, predictable loads of a sealed circuit. Stroke and spring length are both extended well beyond a road-going coilover’s specification, so the unit can absorb chassis vibration and take the full force of high-speed bouncy terrain without running out of travel. Every spring rate offered in this kit has been validated by an active Rally Racing team, not calculated on a bench, which is the difference between a spec sheet number and one that has actually seen a stage.

Fitment for the Mazda 323 Wagon (1998-2004)

Built for the Mazda 323 Wagon, chassis code TYPE1, covering the 1998 to 2004 production run. Confirm your car sits within this chassis code and year span before ordering, as suspension hard points and mounting differ across 323 generations.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
