XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Honda CIVIC FD1 2006-2011

The FD1 Civic was never meant to be a rally car. It is a saloon with a torsion-beam rear and a long wheelbase, which makes broken tarmac stages a particular kind of problem – the back end skips over mid-corner ridges and the nose runs out of travel before the road runs out of corner. The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover is the answer to that specific problem on this specific shell.

This is the rally-stage damper, not the circuit unit. It is tuned to soak up the jolt of a kerb-edge or a patched join without pitching the FD1 off line, then settle quickly enough that the front tyres are loaded again before the next apex. For a tarmac-stage FD1 build, this is the right starting point.

What this coilover does for your 2006-2011 Honda Civic FD1

On a sealed-stage rally setup, the FD1’s front struts spend their life shuttling between full compression over compressions and full extension over crests. The Tarmac Rally damper is valved to absorb that impact without spiking, which keeps the front Yokohamas or Pirellis planted through the secondary hit rather than skating across it. You feel it in the steering – the wheel stops kicking back over patched tarmac, and turn-in stays clean even when the surface is not.

At the rear, the same logic applies to the beam axle. Sharper damper control suppresses the body shock that normally unloads the inside rear over a crest, so traction out of slow corners holds rather than evaporating. The chassis stops bouncing on its own springs and starts working with the road. Stance drops noticeably, but ride height is fully adjustable so you can set it for the stage roads you actually run.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

The Tarmac Rally is XYZ Racing’s sealed-stage damper, valved specifically to absorb the impact of uneven pavement without losing body control. Where a circuit coilover prioritises flat cornering on smooth asphalt, this one is built around the assumption that the road surface is the variable – patched repairs, ridges, drainage covers, broken edges. The valving suppresses shock-body movement under those hits and keeps the tyre in contact with the road through the rebound stroke, which is where tarmac-stage grip is won or lost.

Construction is built around the loads a rally car actually sees – sustained heat, repeated full-stroke impacts, and the side loads that come from running cambered roads at speed. The settings are drawn from XYZ Racing’s own tarmac rally programme, so the baseline tune is a usable starting point rather than a generic factory setting. Ride height, spring preload and damping are adjustable so the chassis can be set up around the driver and the stage profile.
