XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Fiat BERTONE X1/9 1982-1989

The Bertone-era X1/9 was Dallara-influenced mid-engined geometry sold at supermini money, and that’s exactly why it ended up on gravel stages across Europe in the eighties. Short wheelbase, 50/50 mass split, and a willingness to rotate on the throttle make it a genuine rally weapon – but the original Fiat damping was never specified for repeated landings off a yump or for sustained punishment on a Welsh forest stage.

These XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilovers are the inverted-strut answer for owners who actually use their Bertone X1/9 in anger. Long stroke, long spring, and a damper body engineered to swallow gravel, sandstone, snow and silt without packing down.

What this coilover does for your 1982-1989 Fiat Bertone X1/9

The inverted tube layout puts the larger-diameter body at the top of the strut, which stiffens the unsprung assembly against side-loads when a front wheel is loaded into a rut at attack speed. On the X1/9, where the front axle does the steering and the rear does the driving, that translates into a nose that stays planted through compressions instead of skating across loose surface.

Long-stroke travel means the chassis can absorb a full-compression hit – landing off a crest, dropping into a ditch cut – without bottoming the damper or shock-loading the body shell. Spring rates have been signed off by XYZ’s rally team, so the balance arrives sorted for gravel rather than needing weeks of trial-and-error at a test day you can’t afford to book.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

This is XYZ Racing’s purest stage-rally damper, developed specifically for rallycross and gravel-stage competition where the surface is the most aggressive variable in the sport. The construction is inverted-tube – the larger upper body acts as the outer shell, reducing flex under lateral load when a wheel is hammered sideways into a rock or kerb.

Stroke length and spring length are both extended versus tarmac specifications, which is what allows the damper to absorb high-speed bouncy sections and the sustained G-loading of long, fast corners without overheating the oil or collapsing the spring. The shock body is the most important component in the car on a gravel stage – XYZ build this one accordingly, with valving validated against sandstone, snow and silt rather than dyno-room theory. All spring rates have been tested by working rally teams in live competition, not modelled on a spreadsheet.

Fitment for the Fiat Bertone X1/9 (1982-1989)

Engineered for the post-Fiat Bertone-badged X1/9 produced from 1982 through to the end of production in 1989, chassis reference FI03. This covers the 1500 carburettor and FI-injection cars Bertone built after taking over assembly from Fiat. Confirm your build year and any prior suspension modifications before ordering.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
