XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Fiat BERTONE X1/9 1982-1989

The Bertone X1/9 is a mid-engined oddity that rewards a driver who reads the road through the steering wheel, and on a rough tarmac stage that mid-mounted SOHC and the car’s stubby wheelbase will punish anything stiffer than it can handle. This XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover is built for exactly that compromise – keeping the nose planted over broken surfaces while letting the rear stay loaded through quick direction changes.

For sealed-stage tarmac work in a Bertone X1/9, the priority is bump absorption without losing body control, and that is the brief this kit was developed against. The settings carry over from XYZ Racing’s own Tarmac Rally programme.

What this coilover does for your 1982-1989 Fiat Bertone X1/9

On an X1/9 the front end is light, the rear carries the engine, and any pothole or kerb-strike on a rally road can unsettle the whole car mid-corner. This damper soaks up the jolt of a big bump and brings the chassis back to neutral fast, so the front tyres keep contact through the next apex instead of skating wide. You feel that as quieter steering on a rough surface and more confidence to commit when the road surface is unknown.

Stability under hard braking improves because the dampers stop bouncing the chassis on its springs after impact. Traction out of slow corners is the other gain – the rear stays loaded onto the road rather than unloading over surface changes, which on a mid-engined car is where lap time lives.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

The Tarmac Rally is the XYZ Racing damper built specifically to absorb the impact of uneven pavement. The valving is set to take the hit of large bumps without transmitting that shock through the chassis, which lets the tyre stay in contact with the road for longer. That contact patch is what increases mechanical grip on a surface that is broken, patched or cambered.

The damper character suppresses body shock rather than fighting it, so the car settles quickly after a hit instead of skipping. All of the settings are drawn from XYZ Racing’s own tarmac rally competition experience, which means the kit is tuned for cars that need to be fast on a closed public road, not on smooth circuit asphalt. This is a different brief from a circuit coilover and the damping logic reflects that.

This kit is built for the Bertone-era X1/9 produced between 1982 and 1989, after Fiat handed full production over to Bertone. Confirm your build year falls inside that window before ordering.
