XYZ Racing Top Sport Coilovers — Fiat BERTONE X1/9 1982-1989

The Bertone X1/9 is a mid-engined Italian oddity that survives on the road in 2026 mostly because its owners refuse to let it die. Light, transverse-engined, perfectly balanced on paper – and on tatty original dampers it understeers into corners it should be carving through. The XYZ Racing Top Sport coilover for the Fiat Bertone X1/9 (1982-1989) gives that little wedge the supportive, communicative chassis the Gandini geometry always deserved.

This is the spec to choose if your X1/9 sees regular B-road duty and the occasional trackday at Cadwell or Castle Combe. Top Sport sits between street and full-race in the XYZ range, with damping and spring rates built up from years of XYZ’s own circuit programme rather than guessed at from a catalogue.

What this coilover does for your 1982-1989 Fiat Bertone X1/9

After fitting you get a car that finally feels planted under braking into a tightening corner – the X1/9’s biggest weak point on stock suspension, where the unloaded inside rear used to skip and the nose would push. Damping is roughly 30-50% firmer than a street setup, and the springs run around 2kg/mm stiffer, which means the chassis stops floating over crested A-roads and starts feeding mid-corner load through the seat. Bigger compressions – kerbs, broken tarmac on a circuit exit – get absorbed without the suspension running out of travel. Tyre contact stays consistent, so the little 13 or 14 inch wheels actually do some work for once. Ride height comes down to something Bertone arguably intended before EU bumper rules pushed the X1/9 onto stilts.

About the Top Sport coilover

The Top Sport is XYZ Racing’s dual-purpose damper, engineered for track day use and aggressive road driving. Spring rates are roughly 2kg/mm above XYZ’s street setting and damping is increased by 30-50%, which is what gives the kit its ability to absorb a hard hit without unsettling the body. The construction is built to take repeat impacts – the kind of jolt you get clipping a kerb at Donington’s Old Hairpin or hitting a mid-corner pothole flat-out – and the valving is set to suppress secondary body movement quickly so the chassis settles before the next input. Every setting on the Top Sport comes from XYZ’s own race programme, not bench guesswork. The brief is straightforward: a coilover that’s stable enough for circuit work but civilised enough to drive to the circuit.

Fitment for the Fiat Bertone X1/9 (1982-1989)

Built specifically for the late Bertone-badged X1/9, chassis code FI03, covering production years 1982 to 1989. Spring perch threads and mounting hardware are matched to the original X1/9 turret and lower-arm geometry, so the kit fits the car as Bertone left the factory.
