XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — BMW Z3 M 1997-2001

The Z3 M’s short wheelbase and the S50/S52 lump sitting well behind the front axle give it a famously busy rear end – lift mid-corner on a broken B-road and the back steps before you’ve finished thinking about it. A sealed-stage tarmac rally coilover is exactly what this chassis has always wanted: enough compliance to stop the inside rear unloading over crests, enough control to keep the M-tuned rear axle planted when the surface turns ugly.

For a 1997-2001 Z3 M run hard on UK road-rally stages or used as a fast-road weapon on the kind of tarmac that punishes a stiff track setup, the XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover is the right tool. It is built to soak hits without losing tyre contact, and to give a small, light roadster the body control its standard dampers never had.

What this coilover does for your 1997-2001 Bmw Z3 M

You’ll feel the difference first over mid-corner bumps. Where the standard M-spec setup skips and the cheap track coilovers crash, the Tarmac Rally damping is tuned to absorb the hit and put the rear tyre straight back on the road. That translates into traction you can actually use on the throttle out of second-gear corners – the area where a Z3 M with worn dampers feels most nervous. Ride height and corner-weight adjustability let you sort the Z3 M’s inherent cross-weight quirks, get the nose down to reduce the chassis’s habit of running wide on turn-in, and pull a degree or two of useful rake into the geometry. The end result is a Z3 M that no longer needs an apology when the surface deteriorates.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

The Tarmac Rally series is XYZ Racing’s answer to sealed-stage rally use, where the surface is paved but rarely flat. The damper is engineered specifically to absorb the impact of uneven pavement – to take the jolt of a big bump, suppress the body movement that follows, and keep the tyre loaded through the recovery stroke. That bias toward impact absorption is what separates it from a circuit coilover, where the assumption is glass-smooth tarmac and a much narrower window of suspension travel. The settings carry over directly from XYZ Racing’s own tarmac rally programme, so the valving and spring rates reflect real stage experience rather than dyno-bench guesswork. Height-adjustable bodies, mono-tube construction and the familiar XYZ Racing damping platform underpin the unit. The brief throughout is stability under provocation – giving the driver perfect handling on a surface that is doing everything it can to upset the car.

Fitment for the Bmw Z3 M (1997-2001)

This kit is built specifically for the Z3 M chassis (BM72), covering 1997 to 2001 production. It fits the M Roadster and M Coupe variants only – the S50/S52-engined cars on M-specific suspension geometry, not the standard four- and six-cylinder Z3.
